Fontane and his future wife are said to have exchanged vows on the bridge, which was part of the Weidendammer Bridge in Berlin.

The Devil's Bridge on the Finow Canal on the site of the former brass works was built from 1824 to 1826 as the Weidendammer Bridge in Berlin. In 1880, footpaths were added. The bridge was first relocated in 1895, it was shortened by 13 m and rebuilt in Liepe over the Finow Canal. In 1913 it was shortened again and mounted above the exit of the brass factory port.

The middle part of the bridge can be removed to allow passage for larger ships. The bridge is a three-bay, now 23 m long and around 2.30 m wide all-metal construction made of riveted and screwed L-profiles and metal sheets. The central part is bedded on cast-iron columns. The riveted and screwed bridge railing is not part of the original equipment. The entire bridge is crooked, possible reasons for this are careless installation, possible transport damage, subsidence or an accident. The port and canal side of the building are offset by about eight centimetres, which means a tilt of about three degrees. The bridge is under monument protection.
