During the war, 1914, Hermann and Amalie Bauer made bread and rolls in a stone oven in the basement of house number 18. This was the beginning of today's confectionery, bakery, pastry shop, and café. The great-grandparents of the current owner, Andreas Bauer, had the coveted Lauenstein bread delivered on foot over the mountain to the neighbors in Thuringia. In winter, it was transported on skis, which was likely the origin of the ski collection on the wooden facade. When increasing numbers of tourists, especially from Berlin, came to Lauenstein in the late 1960s, the Bauers opened a café and a disco. Since 1979, chocolates have also been produced here, initially around 500 per day, but now the number has risen to 50,000.
