The French general Jean-Victor Moreau was once exiled by Napoleon and then in Russian service. On August 27, 1813, a cannonball shattered both of his legs on the Räcknitzhöhe while he was inspecting the terrain there with the Tsar. The seriously injured man received first aid in the Palitz farmstead (Altpestitz) and was later transported to the Tsar's headquarters at Nöthnitz Castle. There, the tsar's personal physician amputated both of Moreau's legs. A week later he died as a result of the wound. He is said to have been injured at the site of the Moreau memorial and on November 4, 1814, as part of a small memorial service, Moreau's amputated legs were buried in an urn under the memorial. His heart is in Bordeaux, his body in St. Petersburg. So Moreau is a man with three graves!
