The Landcommanderij Alden Biesen is the result of 600 years of construction by the Teutonic Order. After the French Revolution, the Hasselt businessman Guillaume Claes got his hands on the moated castle. Under the Dutch, he had a hard time paying the taxes on the property and so he set up a lottery. The winning ticket got the castle. It was only after a year that he announced the winner... himself. You can walk or hike around the domain for free. A visit to the castle is paid.
