The Leopold Canal was dug in the famine years of 'Arm Vlaanderen', 1846 - 1848. The canal runs from Boekhoute to Heist and had to drain the excess polder water and dry out the grounds. In this way, the polders would be freed from the high humidity that caused the population to suffer from the so-called 'polder fevers'.
