As a memorial to the many war dead, such places - sometimes they are called "cemeteries of honor" - are still very important today. "Now you, O Lord, let your servant depart in peace, as you said..." says the so-called "Song of Simeon" (Gospel of Luke chapter 2, verse 29). However, the many people buried here by no means died in peace, but rather became victims of war and an inhumane tyranny.
The most important and enduring function of military or honorary cemeteries or war cemeteries is therefore to remember this and to remind each generation anew to maintain peace in the long term.

"Anyone who doubts Europe should visit military cemeteries. There one can see what the non-Europe, the opposition of the peoples, the non-willingness to co-operate, the non-togetherness must lead. "(Jean-Claude Junker) Here rest 2460 German war dead, salvaged and buried by the French military authorities, not far from the French military cemetery.
