In 1672, Count Salentin Ernst von Manderscheid-Blankenheim (1630–1705) ordered the expansion and restoration of the town's fortifications. The construction of the fortifications involved the inclusion of the town's extended valley location, beyond which it would not expand significantly until the middle of the 20th century. Part of the expansion was the so-called "external" gate, i.e. the most remote one, which also represented the western end. According to Ernst Wackenroder, there are floor plans and elevations of this gate from 1670, but these were never built. In 1702, the gate was referred to as St. George's Gate.

The most striking witness to Blankenheim's long history: the castle of the same name from the twelfth century, which can be seen from afar, as well as the historic town center with its picturesque half-timbered houses and the partially preserved city wall. Just outside of the medieval castle town, which is idyllically embedded in the hilly Eifel landscape, the Roman Villa Blankenheim invites you with a modern presentation to an excursion into the Roman era.
