Small special church in the middle of the polder landscape.

'In Eremo' means 'in the desert' in Latin. During the Elisabeth flood of 1376, the original church of Sint-Jan-in-Eremo was swallowed up by the water. The vastness and the lack of buildings give this church a special appearance. The expression 'a church at the end of the world' can be taken almost literally here.

St. John the Baptist Church, procession and cemetery.

The picturesque St. John the Baptist Church is a single-nave church built in 1682 and thoroughly restored in 1984. Above the portal is a niche with a sandstone statue of St. John the Baptist from 1646. The building has a beautiful interior in rococo and late baroque. The church furniture includes a beautiful confessional (1699), pulpit (1699) and communion bench (1704) by Hendrik Hagheman from Bruges. The heritage also includes a magnificent monstrance with rays (1725) and a silver reliquary of St. John the Baptist (1775-1776), both made by Pieter De Thieu. St. John in Eremo used to be one of the most visited places of pilgrimage in the Meetjesland. In the still existing procession, prayers were said against epilepsy, the "seskens" or convulsions, fevers and plagues. Protected in 1975.
