Brown coal was mined in the Bransroder tunnel until 1929. For conveyance and transport, a chain railway (slide) was laid down into the valley to the service road between Laudenbach and Uengsterode, the remains of which can still be seen in places today.

In 1622, the first extraction in the Bransroder Revier took place with the construction of the "Alte Häuser Stollen", which was in operation until 1700. As a replacement for this, the construction of the "Bransroder Stollen" began in 1696, which was finally closed in 1929.
The tunnel portal, which had been silted up in the meantime, was uncovered, secured, and restored again in 2008. The structure is now a listed monument and houses bats in winter.
