"The Wire of Death is alive" is a memorial in the landscape in the form of a crocus ribbon between the North Sea and the Drielandenpunt near Vaals. During WW1, the German occupier placed an electrical barrier with a voltage of 2,000 volts along the entire Belgian-Dutch border. It had to stop spies, Belgian war volunteers, German deserters and smugglers. About 1,000 people were killed in the Death Wire. In 2018, students and residents planted white crocuses here along the border. Every spring the crocuses make the former trajectory of the Deathwire visible again.
