Unfortunately St Paul's Shipwreck Church was closed. Instead, the story of the shipwreck can be seen in the covered passage on the two side walls. It is not easy to reach the church as traffic passes on both sides.

The new church was ceremoniously consecrated on May 3, 1617 by Bishop Baldassare Cagliares. After 1798 and the departure of the Knights from the island, the church building was taken over by the government and underwent various modifications, which over time led to the loss of its original form.
On March 20, 1942, a single bomb from an enemy aircraft almost completely destroyed the church, which the Maltese called Santwarju tal-Ħuġġieġa. It was rebuilt in 1950 in the form specified by Wignacourt and consecrated on February 7, 1957 by Archbishop Mikiel Gonzi.
