The church was first mentioned in a document in 1270. In the 12th and 13th centuries, Gmunden became a trading point for salt and thus prosperous. In Gmunden, there was only one chapel, the Anna Chapel, to the northwest of the later parish church. It later served as a cemetery chapel and was demolished in 1844. All that remains of it is the gate, which forms the tower gate of the current church. The three-aisled basilica was built in the Gothic style near the outflow of Lake Traunsee. Remains of Gothic frescoes from that period have been preserved inside.
