Careaz Dr. Jenny and Bültenhaus Cross-Border Bridge

Border runs through a building
Probably unique in Europe, there is a care and housing project for seniors and people with disabilities on Heelweg, in which a Dutch and a German sponsor are cooperating across the border: The "CAREAZ-Dr. Jenny and Bültenhaus". The special feature of the building complex: the facilities on both sides of the border are connected by a bridge. The living room of a flat-sharing community and the German-Dutch meeting center "Die Taverne" are located directly above the street with its state border.

History was made with this European project. The Bültenhaus was opened in 2009 and offers senior apartments on the German side, which are maintained by the Diakonie Johanneswerk, and there is a retirement home on the Dutch side. In the café, directly across the Hellweg, in the middle between the two facilities, people met for events and to exchange ideas. Unfortunately, the tavern (café) has been closed since Corona (2020) and has not reopened.Today: European everyday life instead of euphoria! The hoped-for meeting of seniors from both sides hardly takes place anymore. The different accounting systems are also a barrier.Conclusion: In order to live in a common Europe, everyone has to work on it.
