The mighty equestrian statue of Gabriel de Grupello, which the elector had set for himself during his lifetime (1711), is considered to be one of the most important baroque sculptures north of the Alps.

Johann Wilhelm II., Elector Palatinate, Duke of Jülich-Berg, Count Palatine of Neuburg - affectionately known as "Jan Wellem" in Düsseldorf - was born in 1658 in the Düsseldorf City Palace. In 1679 he joined the Jülich-Bergische Succession as elector of the Palatinate and chief clerk of the Roman Empire. This marked the beginning of a brilliant period in Düsseldorf's city history: the Residenz became one of Europe's cultural centers.

Jan Wellem, in High German: Johann Wilhelm of the Palatinate, must have been a true Düsseldorfer. He led a lavish court life, was fun-loving and fond of the fine arts.
During his lifetime, in the mid-17th to early 18th century, the Elector founded the Düsseldorf Picture Gallery and thus laid the foundation for the art metropolis on the Rhine. No wonder the city thanked one of its favorite sons. "The most beautiful equestrian statue north of the Alps," is how connoisseurs rave about the monument by Gabriel de Grupello, which was erected on the market square in 1711 - just a few steps from Jan Wellem's former residence, the former Düsseldorf Palace on Burgplatz.

The Jan Wellem monument in Düsseldorf City Hall was completed by the sculptor Gabriel de Grupello after 1697/before 1708. The marble statue depicts Johann Wilhelm of Palatinate-Neuburg, known to the people of Düsseldorf who spoke Lower Franconian at the time as Jan Wellem, Elector of the Palatinate and Duke of Jülich-Berg. The baroque statue was erected in the middle of the inner courtyard of the picture gallery at Düsseldorf Castle after the Grupello pyramid that had previously been placed there was taken to Mannheim in 1738. In 1911, Jan Wellem was supposed to be erected in front of Jägerhof Castle, but ended up in the recently shortened garden behind the gallery building, the courtyard of the School of Applied Arts. On March 12, 1941, the Jan Wellem statue was dismantled and brought to the Art Museum. After the Second World War, around 1960, the marble statue was placed in the hall on the first floor of the City Hall. Until then, the work was mistakenly attributed to the sculptor Josef Bäumgen (1714–1789), who had only created the relief panels in 1780. According to current information, it is an original work by Gabriel de Grupello.

The figure is life-sized and stocky. It stands in full armor and with a falling cloak. The right hand holds a marshal's baton. The left arm is resting on its side. The ruler's head is crowned with a laurel wreath. The honoree's chest is adorned with the chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. On the side, the head of a lion appears, the heraldic animal of Berg, Jülich and the Electorate of the Palatinate. The marble panels of the previous base, which depicted emblems of war and the fine arts, were on display in the historical museum.
