Saint Mauritius, who gave his name to the Moritzkirche (first mentioned in 1212) and later became the patron saint of the city of Zwickau, is depicted in a window above the main portal.

The three-aisled church, built in the historicist style and consecrated in 1893, combines neo-Gothic and neo-Romantic elements.

The previous buildings had been destroyed and rebuilt several times and finally became too small in the course of industrialization, so that a new building was necessary. The foundation stone is under today's pulpit.

In the large, light nave, each of the approx. 1100 seats has a view of the pulpit and altar (both made of oak) and excellent acoustics are guaranteed. The organ was built in 1896 by the Dresden company Jehmlich.

The entire building is covered with relief-like brick ornamentation, in which red unglazed bricks alternate with green and brown glazed bricks. In total, the church has 116 different brick profiles. The western gable wall is flanked by two octagonal towers with conical roofs. There are large rose windows above the main portal and in the side aisles. A ring of five smaller chapels adjoins the chancel in the east. The 71 meter high crossing tower with a pyramid roof and square corner towers rises above the central main dome.
