Hiking
If you have a flashlight and waterproof shoes, you can see how far into the tunnel you can go without needing rubber boots.
While there are no ore veins on the walls (which is why there was no further mining activity other than the test tunnel), there are occasional dates that document the progress of the miners at that time.
