The Valley of the Grote Beek cuts through the Wiestermeers landscape.

The Lower Dender Valley, between Aalst, Lebbeke and Dendermonde, is a beautiful open natural landscape of 850 hectares, where Natuurpunt is committed to improving natural values. The Dender runs like a vein through the nature reserve, where beavers and herons feel very much at home.

All year round freely accessible on the hiking trails. Boots or sturdy walking shoes recommended. Dogs welcome, on a leash.

The walking route From Market to Market (15.3 km) takes you through the areas of Beneden-Dender along the Dender from Aalst to Dendermonde or vice versa. The Vossenwegel route (10 km, start of Denderbelle or Wieze church) leads you through the Wiestermeers, Hannaerden and Bellebroek sub-areas. The Alfons De Cock hiking trail (7.6 km) lets you enjoy the fauna and flora of the Hogedonk and Denderland sub-area. Bellebroek can be explored via the Bellebroekwegel (6,5 km). Hoekskenpad (5.7km) takes you along the most beautiful spots in the Hoekske area. In Mespelare and Hogedonk you may be able to see the beaver on the route of the Mespelwegel (7.2 km).

Natuurpunt has also built a cozy picnic spot in the Wiestermeers, on an old Denderarm where a honey grove was also planted. The Wiestermeers nature trail was also constructed a few years ago. The trail passes through a forest complex that is very old and valuable. The trees and shrubs are the descendants of trees and shrubs that settled after the last ice age, 13,000 years ago. The path offers a view of the right bank of an Oude Dender, rows of pollard willows and passes a castle park and a historic farm.
