Little scientific research has been done on the origins of the parish and the construction history of the church. According to J. De Brouwer, the name of the patron saint, Saint Salvator, indicates a very old age, dating back to the beginning of Christianization in the 6th-7th century and is unique in the Land van Aast. The mention of the church of the Holy Savior in the Vita Gudulae or biography of Saint Gudula (° 644, † 712) where the saint came to pray daily, two miles from her home, the castle of Hamme-Herdersem, could possibly refer to the church of Wieze. The first clear evidence of the existence of the church can be found in a document from 1105 in which Bishop Odo of Cambrai transferred several churches, including that of Wieze, to the newly founded abbey of Affligem, which thereby acquired the right of patronage and a share of the tithe. Originally it was probably a domain church founded by the local lord.

The church is first mentioned in a document from 1105 in which Bishop Odo van Doornik van Kamerijk refers to, among other things, the church of Wieze and donated it to the abbey of Affligem, which had just been founded. As a result, the abbey acquired patronage rights and part of the tithe.

The current church building, the core of which dates from the 14th or 15th century, is made entirely of Balegem stone, with the exception of the stair tower. In 2019 no traces of an older, possibly Romanesque church have been found. There is still a lack of thorough archaeological or building-historical research for this. In 2000 building fragments were found in the center of the village that may indicate a construction site closer to the old Denderweg.

A number of repairs and renovations followed one another in both the 16th and 17th centuries. These were the result of destruction in 1578 by Calvinists from Ghent and in 1667 by the French under Louis XIV. The finances for the construction work came from the village lord, the bailiff or the abbey of Affligem. The Ghent architect August Van Assche extended the church to the west by one and a half bays, replaced the stone vaults again with wooden ones, partly in function of the new large church organ.

The current floor plan shows a three-aisled nave of five bays and projecting transepts of one bay. The crossing tower is square and the choir has a three-sided apse.

In 2019, the cemetery that surrounded the church has disappeared.
