The first Hessian railway ran through the middle of Grebenstein's lower town from 1848 to 1875. Technical development progressed at a rapid pace during this time, and with it the speed of the trains. After a serious train accident on the very tight curve, the railway was relocated to the current route outside the town walls in 1875.
