On Sunday, August 23, 1914, the Germans committed the most horrific acts of violence against the civilian population and most of Dinant's buildings were destroyed. A total of 674 inhabitants, including women, the elderly and children, were murdered by the Germans.
At this place called Cliche de Bois, right opposite the abbey of Leffe, the first mass murder took place. 43 people were killed here.
The inscription on the monument: "RECONNAISSANCE / VŒU DE LA POPULATION 1918 / 23 AOÛT / 1914 / À NOS MARTYRS".
