From the river bank you can look across to the “Chñteau de Walzin”, which sits on a steep limestone cliff high above the Lesse. The castle is privately owned and cannot be visited, but the view of the fairytale castle alone is reason enough for this detour.

Beautiful rock in the green landscape... At the top you have a view of the valley...

The Chateau de Walzin, in Dutch the Castle of Walzin, is located in Dréhance, a sub-municipality of the large city of Dinant. One thing is certain, this castle really has a beautiful location. The neo-Gothic castle stands on a steep rock above the right bank of the River Lesse. During a canoe trip on the Lesse you can really see how high the rocks really are! Unfortunately, the castle is not open to tourists so you will have to make do with the beautiful sights from the outside!
The history of the Chateau de Walzin goes back a long way. A castle was built on this strategic location as early as the 11th and 12th centuries. Of these medieval buildings, only the keep has been preserved. The ruins of the medieval walls can also be seen. These are 13 meters long and up to over 3 meters thick. The foundations of the current castle date from 1850, when Baron Alfred Brugmann started working on the ruins and made many restorations. In 1930, another baron, Frédéric Brugmann de Walzin, had the castle thoroughly renovated again. He chose the Maasland style, common in the region. The renovation took 2 years and the beautiful result is still there.
