The artificial lake was created by damming the Nymphenburg-Biederstein Canal. It forms the center of the residential complex on Berliner Strasse from the 1980s, which was built on the site of the former Schwabing goods station. Based on the idea of the garden city, a residential area with quiet inner courtyards and space-defining streets and squares was created. Existing pedestrian and cycle path connections were integrated into the planning and continued - but it is not very well known that the area can be crossed publicly on quiet paths.
The lake is also a reminder that in earlier times the canal sometimes dammed up to form a small lake, the "Schwarze Lacke".
