The chamber lock is located at the mouth of Ribe Å in the Wadden Sea. It was built in 1912 in connection with the construction of a dike 1911-1915, which was built after several storm surges with water levels up to 4.41 meters above the daytime water in Ribe.

The 15 km long dyke, which ran from the Roborghus charging station near Tjæreborg in the north to Vester Vedsted in the south, was intended to protect the low-lying areas behind against flooding and storm surges. The lock, which consists of two gates, is intended to bring the ships from one water level to the other and to compensate for the normal tidal difference of around two meters in the Wadden Sea.

Ribe Å has been the city's lifeblood and main thoroughfare throughout history, but larger ships, receding water depths, sandbanks, difficult ridge slopes and more made navigating the river difficult, and its outer course was laid in the river as early as 1855 and the dug canal where it still is running.

The special thing about this lock is the narrow, separate pedestrian crossing and the separate single-lane car overpass (only cars, let alone trucks, there is no space)
