The monument erected here provides information about the Grænsestien (Border Path), a (hiking) path along the Danish-Prussian border that existed from 1864 to 1920. After winning the war against Denmark in 1864, Prussia annexed the duchies of Holstein and Schleswig. In 1920, after Prussia had lost the First World War, the German-Danish border that still applies today was determined by a referendum, whereby large parts of Schleswig became part of Denmark and the smaller part remained with Prussia (Germany).
