City Church, Chirchhofplatz 10, Stein am Rhein

Once monastery church. Built in the 12th century under the influence of the Hirsau reform. The iconoclasm of the Reformation destroyed the interior, with the exception of the choir stalls and paintings. 1583/84 conversion to a Protestant church. Various alterations in the 19th and 20th. 1561 removal of the church tower struck by lightning; the other tower is slightly crooked and has a spindled roof.

The town church stands in the middle of the beautifully preserved medieval townscape. Originally it was the collegiate church of the St. Georgen monastery. The monastery was secularized during the Reformation. The beautiful Romanesque basilica has served as the parish church of Stein and Hemishofen ever since. The four-part bells and the large Metzler organ invite you to a festive retreat during the service every Sunday. Directly attached to the town church you will find the so-called "Mesmerhus", the foyer of the parish.
