Sheltered by the Jaramilla Valley, in the Sierra de Ayllón, and closely watched by the Ocejón peak, Campillo de Ranas behind its blackboard looks like a unique piece of Black Architecture in the area. Popular architecture is shown to us as an emblem of the landscape and a perfect match with it. Wooden frames and slate slabs open between the stone, the bushes and the valley, as if the land, the architecture and its people were a whole assembled in the symbolism of the Sierra Negra. The slate wafers impose themselves on the eye, covering tiled walls and delimiting the fields with their dark fences of piles of flakes.

The hermitages and churches of the towns of the Serranía de Guadalajara are also part of the black architecture, they are temples that respond to the popular Romanesque model and most of them were built in the 12th and 13th centuries in a border territory between the Christian kingdoms to the north and the Muslim taifas to the south. The church of Santa María Magdalena de Campillo de Ranas is an architectural marvel in the religious constructions of the black towns of the Serranía de Guadalajara. The best representations of religious architecture are in the temples of Villacadima and Campisábalos, and in the church of Santa Coloma de Albendiego, an authentic jewel of the local Romanesque.

Nice town of the so-called blacks of Guadalajara. Impressive routes to walk through the valleys of the high Jarama.
