Mayaelrayo is located in the valley on the banks of the Jaramilla, besieged by the Ocejón, Atalaya, Campachuelo, Collado de San Pedro, Las Cabañuelas and Cabeza del Rocín peaks, which seem to submerge the valley, the basin and the town under the mountains. Semblance of the black architecture of the area, the slate bathes its houses dotted with the wood of its frame and its openings. Inside, the rooms are distributed on the main floor, where the kitchen stands out with the integrated or attached stable; On this body, the hall serves as a store and bears his name: "el sobrao". The extensive slate roof with a gabled slope completes the picture of popular construction typical of the area. The streets adapt to the orography and even to the stones that sprout from the ground and condition the street and the passage.

This small municipality is located at the foot of the mountain, whose highest peak is Ocejón at 2049 meters high. This great natural wall can be seen from any point in Majaelrayo, but you can get the most impressive views from the eastern part of the town.

Here, you can admire the characteristic constructions of this area, in which clay, wood and black slate cannot be missing. It is worth exploring every corner of the town and the paths that lead into nature. If you need to recover energy, you can always visit the town bar and try the gastronomic delights of the mountains.

The slate is the fundamental material of the structures and the popular constructions in the towns of the black architecture, the slate slabs are in the walls, the paving of the streets and the squares, the closures of the corrals, the fences of the corrals and the cattle farms. The grey, bluish and black tones of the stone give the towns a dark and primitive atmosphere, they are images of an era that seems frozen in time. Clay, wood and quartzite boulders to prop up and reinforce the walls complete the structure of the buildings. The slate was extracted at the peak of the vein in large blocks or rocks and in the quarry itself it was crushed into manageable pieces for the construction of the walls and tapials or in flat and elongated slabs to pave the streets. The mud was transported in cavalries to the construction site, where it was mixed with vegetable fibers to form adobe and hit with a hoe to create a homogeneous mass with which to plaster the interior walls and partitions.

The most widespread and traditional typology in the towns of black architecture is the single floor, in low and collected houses, with narrow and small holes to isolate themselves from cold, heat and extreme environmental conditions. The kitchen is the most important room, it fulfills the functions of a living room, food preparation, bread oven, drying place for the slaughter and hall.
