The Cornberg mining settlement was built in autumn 1938. Originally, a small town for 800-900 mining families was supposed to be built under the Nazi regime. But during the devastating war, housing construction came to a standstill. Only 368 residential units were built and all community facilities were missing. At the end of the war in 1945, mining had to stop and at the end of the year the Cornberg settlement was confiscated by the United Nations in order to set up a camp for survivors of Nazi persecution. The miners' families had to vacate their homes for 3.5 years. Mining resumed around 1950. But the final end came in 1955, the annual losses were too great and foreign countries supplied copper at much cheaper prices. In 2006, the small square with a bench and trolley was designed by the settler community.
