Right next to the Cornberg monastery is the beautiful sandstone lake, which is also a good place to take a break.
Behind it is (however fenced) the former red sand quarry, in which sandstone was mined for 700 years.
The sandstone museum is very clear and interesting, with the geological-paleontological part about the history and the origin of the Cornberg sandstone. The attached museum section is particularly interesting for children with numerous fossils from the copper slate of the Richelsdorf Mountains and the Cornberger Zechstein, which give an impression of the earlier biodiversity of marine animals and plants.

The abandoned Cornberg quarry is one of the outstanding national geotopes in Hesse. In 2016 it was named Geotope of the Year by the Hessian State Office for Environment and Geology. BUT: A visit is unfortunately only possible on special occasions or after prior registration for a guided tour! Only the lake below the quarry can be controlled, the rest of the area is fenced in and not really visible from the outside. It's a pity - that's not going to work with the tourist marketing. It remains to be seen whether this will change now that Cornberg is part of the Geo-Nature Park Frau-Holle-Land.
