Hiking
The Heiligenstadt-Schwebda line was put into operation on October 1, 1914. It was important at the time that the line was built to standard gauge and could therefore be integrated into the state railway network. The difficult profile of the line posed major challenges for the routing. The considerable differences in height could only be overcome by installing rack sections and using rack locomotives. Dismantling of the line began in July 1946.
