The Cologne Randkanal was planned and built in the years 1954 to 1957 by the predecessor companies of RWE Power AG with the participation of the former district of Cologne. In addition to the removal of the sump water (groundwater) from the opencast mining areas of RWE Power AG, the canal is still used today for the drainage of large parts of the western / northwestern surroundings of Cologne and the Rhine-Erftkreis. The length of the Cologne Randkanal (outlet of the Ville tunnel in Frechen-Königsdorf to the mouth in the Rhine at Cologne-Worringen (Rhine-km 710.5) is 19.68 km.
