The Fichtelberg rises within the Middle Ore Mountains in the Ore Mountains/Vogtland Nature Park around 1.5 km north of the state border. At the southern foot of the mountain is the health resort of Oberwiesenthal in the Pöhlbach Valley, the highest town in Germany. About 750 m to the south-southwest is the Kleine Fichtelberg (also called the Hinterer Fichtelberg; 1205.6 m) as a less prominent secondary summit of the Fichtelberg. About 4 km south-southeast rises with the Czech Klínovec (Keilberg; 1244 m) the highest elevation of the Ore Mountains. Numerous streams have their source in the wet spring hollows and high moors on the Fichtelberg. The most important river that has its source there is the Zschopau.
