This impressive walled gate is part of the Valença Fortress, which has been watching over the River Minho since the 17th century. The polygonal shape with double walls separated by a ditch stands out. The walls surround a beautiful historic center full of architectural gems.

The South gate is the main entry into this amazingly well-preserved fortified town. Note that the north gate approach has stairs, so it's best to just use that for exiting if comfortable walking the bike down (you can roll it down next to the stairs), or use the bikeable east gate in the middle of town.

The walled city of Valença is located on the Minho River on the border with Spain. The well-preserved fortifications were built in the 17th - 18th centuries in the style of French military architect Vauban.
