The memorial opened on June 11, 2011.In order to produce cheaply, Elster GmbH, as the company was known for camouflage purposes, decided with the SS to build a concentration camp in Kamenz and force the prisoners to work for Elster GmbH.
It was decided to house the prisoners in the former cloth factory in Herrental.Starting at the end of 1944, prisoners from the surrounding concentration camps began arriving at the Kamenz subcamp. There were approximately 1,000 of them, primarily political opponents of the National Socialist regime. They were selected based on two criteria: the prisoners had to have a profession suitable for the job, such as welder or lathe operator, and, if possible, be able to speak French.
During the 130 days of the camp's existence, 182 people are documented to have died here. Their names are recorded on four plaques at the memorial. It is assumed that there were almost 100 additional deaths, but their names were unfortunately lost.
