This chapel under the two lime trees was built by the church of Steenhuffel in 1849, on the land of the noble family De Lalaing, owners of the old Diepensteyn domain.

In the chapel there is a statue of Our Lady in high relief made of French stone and painted. The vault of the chapel is painted as a sky with stars. On the side walls are the words ‘Hail Mary’ and ‘Full of grace’.

Why the chapel was built is not yet known. We do know that during the period of its foundation our regions were plagued by red fluke and by famine as a result of two consecutive years of failure of the potato harvest and as a result of the disease on the grain, by the outbreak of typhoid and cholera. Many people died of disease and deprivation. The establishment of the chapel can possibly be seen in that context, on the one hand as a plea to the Holy Mary to save the people from these disasters and on the other hand as thanks because the worst has already happened. The chapel was restored in 2007.
