Sonnenberg Castle is an impressive ruin of a spur castle that stands majestically above the Sonnenberg district of Wiesbaden. This historic fortress was built around 1200 by Counts Henry II and Rupert of Nassau to protect the region from the neighboring Lords of Eppstein.

The castle was built by the Nassau count from 1201 to 1203. The expansion took place at the end of the 13th century. At the end of the 16th century the castle fell into disrepair. A first renovation took place between 2005 and 2015. Further renovation began in 2019 and is ongoing, which means that the interior and the castle museum are currently closed.
