The 52-meter-high dam with its 640-meter-long crown was built between 1956 and 1965, after initial planning had already been carried out before the Second World War. The last comprehensive renovation of the main wall took place in 2015. The damming of the Bigge has created the second largest dam in North Rhine-Westphalia in terms of storage volume.
