The foundation of the abbey of S. Salvatore all'Isola, dating back to 1001, is due to Ava, a noblewoman of the Lambardi di Staggia family. The place where the monastery stands - which as the name recalls was once surrounded by water - is chosen mainly for the strategic position controlling the Via Francigena, of which Borgonuovo (later Abbadia Isola) was a stopping point from the very end. of the 10th century. During the subsequent ones, one of the main functions of the abbey will continue to be the hospital one, or rather as a shelter and hospitality for travelers in transit through Rome. Since its foundation, the monastery has experienced a notable economic and political rise, which will continue until the mid-thirteenth century. Subsequently a slow decline will begin which in 1446 will lead to the aggregation of the monastery to that of S. Eugenio near Siena.
