Cornelius Jansenius, proper name Cornelius Jansen (Acquoy, October 281585 – Leuven, May 6 1638) was a Roman Catholic priest, bishop and theologian in the Southern Netherlands. In his major work he stated, starting from the church father Augustine of Hippo and going against the Jesuits, that man is by predestination at the mercy of God and cannot contribute voluntarily to his salvation or damnation, because his will too is indestructible. Posthumously, this Jansenism, which also had a political component, was repeatedly condemned by the Church.
