This Romanesque church, one of the largest in the city, replaced in the 12th century a basilica founded in the 6th century by the Bishop of Lucca, St. Frediano. He is credited with the miracle of curbing the waters of the Serchio. A remarkable feature of the church is that the choir is on the west, contrary to the tradition that churches should face east towards Jerusalem. The façade bears a large 13th century mosaic
