The nature reserve is a peninsula on the northern bank of the Schlei estuary, east of the town of Maasholm. It is a naturally formed, very varied beach wall landscape. The eastern shoreline is a typical flat coast with beach, dunes, beach ridges and dry grassland. Spit hooks with pronounced wind wads are formed on the west side. They are unique on the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea coast and of great importance for bird life. Oehe-Schleimünde is an important breeding, resting and wintering area for Nordic migratory birds. Arctic terns, oystercatchers, gulls, ducks and geese, among others, use this retreat. The area is part of the Stiftungsland, the nationwide network of valuable natural areas of the Schleswig-Holstein Nature Conservation Foundation. A Galloway herd ensures extensive grazing all year round. The aim is to promote meadow-breeding bird species.
