This old tunnel once served a railway line known as the Vennbahn, which ran from Aachen to Troivierges (Luxembourg). Construction of the line began in 1882 and was intended to serve several Prussian towns, many of which are now part of Belgium. The last service ceased in 1989. The current route was opened to bicycles in 2013. The Vennbahn is one of the longest cycle paths in Europe.

The Vennbahn runs from Aachen via Monschau to Belgium and Luxembourg and, at 125 kilometers, is one of the longest railway cycle paths in Europe. The Vennbahn crosses the borders between the three countries more than a dozen times along the route. In the 19th century, the Vennbahn was used to transport coal and iron ore by rail from Aachen to Luxembourg and back. Today, cyclists can use the disused railway line, which has been converted into a cycle path, to explore the towns, villages, and sights along the route. Source: nrw-tourismus.de/a-vennbahn
