The foundation stone for what was then the Church of the Holy Cross was laid on July 1, 1385. A Romanesque stone church probably stood on the site of today's church as early as the 11th century. Parts of this structure are said to have been reused on the semicircular apse. During the Thirty Years' War the building was partially destroyed by fire. After reconstruction, the church was renamed Sankt Marien. The southern leg of the cross has been preserved from the former cross shape. From the 16th century, several of Martin Luther's sermon stays in the church are documented.
