The Leijgraaf or Leigraaf is a stream in the east of North Brabant. The Leijgraaf is not a natural stream, but was originally a damp low. Old names for that low area included 'de Meer' or 'De Jeucke'. After excavation, the general name became Leijgraaf, literally guided dug loop.
Before the canalisation, the Leijgraaf often ran dry in the summer. In the 50s and 60s of the 20th century, the Leijgraaf was canalized and weirs were built to regulate the water level. As a result, the Leijgraaf has become a stream with long straight parts. The Aa en Maas Water Board is currently carrying out work to make the banks more natural. Fish ladders are also created at the weirs. The main aim of this work is to provide amphibians and fish with more opportunities to expand their habitat.
