In 1952 the Rhine island of Kühkopf was declared a protected area. In the course of further ordinances, an almost 24 square kilometer floodplain protection area with the Rhine island of Kühkopf and the adjacent floodplain complex of the Knoblochsaue to the north was finally put under protection.

The Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue European Reserve in the Groß-Gerau district is the largest nature reserve in Hesse. It is part of the Hessian Ried between the Rhine and Bergstrasse. It is also designated as the largest contiguous flood plain along the Hessian banks of the Rhine and thus serves to protect against flooding.

In the protected area there are both softwood meadows with the gnarled pollarded willows and black poplars that are characteristic of this landscape, and hardwood meadows with oak, elm and ash trees.
Fruit growing on the Kühkopf has a centuries-old tradition. In 1960, 3531 apple, 61 pear, 130 plum, 36 walnut and 5 plum trees were counted. The character of an orchard landscape is a conservation objective. There are still more than 2000 fruit trees and more than 30 varieties of apples in the nature reserve. The character of an avenue of apple trees was preserved on the kilometer-long path from Hofgut Guntershausen to the Rhine ferry to Guntersblum. The first 1500 meters at the training center are designated as an apple nature trail.
The extensive wetlands in the floodplain landscape with grass, reed and hardwood plants provide resting and breeding grounds for numerous bird species. The April 1983 dam breach was intentionally not repaired. Agriculture, which was no longer protected from flooding, was abandoned and the areas were left to develop naturally. They are exposed to the regular flooding of the Rhine. However, the level of the Rhine continues to fall by up to 1 cm per year, while every flood deposits silt and the areas slowly dry out.
The symbolic animal of the cow's head is the black kite. Red and wild boar, foxes, frogs, common toads are common in the sanctuary.
In spring, large parts of the forest floor are covered with wild garlic.
In winter, many trees in the peripheral areas of the floodplain forest with mistletoe nests can be clearly seen.
The area is part of the Geo-Nature Park Bergstrasse-Odenwald. Since 2004 a project for the renaturation of the river valley meadows has been running. When they gave up farming in 1983, they did not resettle of their own accord, as nature conservationists had expected; rather, here the transfer of mature seeds of the characteristic plants is helped.

Little-visited byway. The cow's head can be discovered here in its most original form. At the beginning of May very green and wild garlic next to the paths.
