"... The Murg valley is one of the largest and deepest valleys in the Black Forest (up to more than 700 meters) and generally runs northwards. It separates the main ridge of the northern Black Forest with its high rainfall with the Hornisgrinde (1164 m) in the west from the densely wooded Buntsandstein plateaux in the east.
The Murg arises from two larger source streams in the western area of the municipality of Baiersbronn. Below the Schliffkopf at about 870 m above sea level. NHN height arises, slightly above the Murgursprung, as the main spring stream the Rechtmurg. The other source stream on the left is the Rotmurg, which flows below the Ruhestein pass (915 m) from the Rotmurg fountain (also 915 m) and forms the Teufelsmühle waterfall in addition to smaller steps.
From the junction of its two source streams at an altitude of around 595 m, the Murg flows southeast through Mitteltal to Baiersbronn, where it turns in the direction of the Forbach, which flows in from the south. From here you follow the federal road 462 and the Murgtalbahn together. Initially it runs northeast to Klosterreichenbach, but from then on it runs north-northwest. In a wide meadow valley, it passes the towns of Röt, Huzenbach and Schönmünzach. After a narrow area with few settlements and a particularly high gradient, the Forbach, Gausbach, Langenbrand and Au in the Murg valley follow in a rocky section. The villages of Weisenbach, Hilpertsau, Obertsrot, Scheuern, the town of Gernsbach and finally Hörden lie in close succession in the slowly widening valley. Between now gently rising slopes, the Murg runs north-west through Ottenau, past the industrial town of Gaggenau and the towns of Bad Rotenfels, Oberndorf, Bischweier and Kuppenheim, where it reaches the Upper Rhine Plain. Here it passes under the A 5 near Niederbühl before flowing around the center of Rastatt. Below Rheinau, the Murg flows into the Rhine near Steinmauern at a height of about 110 m at Rhine kilometer 344.5..."
