Pader River

With a length of only about four kilometers, the Pader is considered the shortest river of this size in Germany. The Pader has a mean water supply of more than 4 m³ / s and is thus much larger at the mouth into the lip than this, which also springs just a few kilometers away. It flows along its entire length in the urban area of ​​the East Westphalian town of Paderborn, for which it is named: The name Paderborn is made up of Pader and Born, a former name for a spring

THE PADER SOURCE AREA OVER TIME

Until the end of the 12th century, the walled city with Charles Castle lay above the Paderquelle.
Only then did the city walls also include the lower source area of the Pader.
The expansion of the city's fortifications - especially after 1224 - was so generous that the population did not feel forced to settle in the immediate, swampy source area.
For a long time, the bourgeois town of the Middle Ages with its houses, shops, churches and monasteries was located on a step above the Pader source area.
In the immediate spring area there was only the cathedral deanery - today's city library - and the water art, with the help of which the spring water was pumped into the fountains in the higher city districts.
