The Brehme/sandwater retention basin has been in operation since 1989. Its task is to protect the Duderstadt city center from flooding.
The construction goes back to the flood of the century in 1981, which caused great damage in Duderstadt.
It had to pass the first notable acid test in July 2017. The basin was completely filled and the level was exceeded. Due to the constant rain, the water rose close to the overflow threshold.
