Johann Matthias Sperger was the most important double bassist of the Viennese Classical period. He was a musician in the Ludwigslust Court Orchestra from 1789 until his death in 1812 and left behind an extremely rich compositional legacy.
Today, Sperger's name stands for inventiveness, creativity, virtuosity, diversity in the approach to music, creativity, and commitment.
He represents both the traditional and the modern in music.
The Ludwigslust-Parchim District Music School embraces this aspiration.

Even from afar, a single two-story building stands out on the church square. This house, at number 13, formerly housed the institution for the deaf and dumb, established in 1840. Previously, the court chaplain (1785–1795) Dr. Passow and the poet Walter Pegel lived here. Today, this building houses the district music school, which was named after the composer and court musician Johann Matthias Sperger in 2003.
