In the spirit of the French philosopher J.J. Rousseau, the forest area west of Hofdamenallee was incorporated into the palace park as a kind of village landscape around 1790. Master builder J.J.Busch built three so-called Swiss houses in the middle of meadows and house gardens; the larger one became the favorite stay of the heavyweight Duchess Louise. When she died in 1808, in accordance with her express will and against all convention, she was buried at the Schweizerhaus under one of her beloved old trees. - After her death, the building had a very eventful history.
